Are You Prepared

Preparedness Tips.
Food Planning.
The Big question some say 3 days other 1 week ,2 weeks 1 month 3 month!!! I would recommend at least a 7 to 14 day food supply for you and your family. Select foods that require no refrigeration, preparation or cooking, and little to no water. Avoid foods that will make you thirsty - choose salt-free crackers, whole-grain cerals, and canned foods with high water content. Ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits, vegetables and a can opener
Protein or fruit bars
Dry cereal or granola
Peanut butter
Dried fruit
Nuts
Crackers
Canned juices
Non-perishable pasteurized milk
High energy foods
Vitamins
Food for infants
Comfort/stress foods
Dont forget special dietary needs of any elderly people in your family if they have any.
And I know I already said this, but get a Manual Can opener and keep it with your items. There are also a Wide variety of survival foods on the market these days, That can be costly but the benefits of Long term storage and pre packaging may be what you are looking for. This type of food items can easily be found by a Internet search.
It sounds like a lot and some of you may turn away and say Ill take my chances. But to be honest Most of this stuff you already have in your cabinets and Thats a Good starting place. and then when you go to the store get a few more items and add them to your kit and before you know it Your stocked and Ready.

........................................................................................................
When making up your Preparedness plan and your Go bag for yourself and family members remember to put an old set of eyeglasses in it and any prescription medicine you take. Date the bottles like you would water and make sure you rotate it out as needed. Talk to your Pharmacist about shelf life and storage conditions of your medicine Be upfront and honest and your pharmacist will be more than happy to help. I keep a Months supply of our medicines in our go bags.

............................................................................................................
Disasters don't have to come in the form of Tornado's or wind damage. Do you have a Fire Plan for your home? Do you keep a Fire extinguisher in a easy to get to location? Does your family members know how to use it? Get a fireproof box for documents. If you live on the second floor of a building you can purchase a Emergency Escape ladder. Know when you can and cant burn outside. A little bit of Prevention now will help Prevent a personal disaster from happening tomorrow.

Christian County CERT Role in our Community
Christian County CERT Role in our Community

Time after time when disaster strikes it is the people in the community that are the First Responders. When the System gets overwhelmed and the First Responders are spread too thin (Fire Dept. EMS, Rescue Squad and police) it has been the neighbors that come out to help in emergencies. CERT trains you in how to handle disaster situations and the people in your community.
CERT Training teaches you after a disaster, put yourself and family first. Make sure your family is safe and secure before you deploy.
After you are sure your family is safe you go and check on your neighbors and ensure they are safe. Then the CERT members go to your teams rally or meeting place. Along the way you access the neighborhood and report it as you arrive. The Group leader will then determine immediate needs and deploy the teams to those areas to help the victims of the disaster.
We have real threats of disaster here in Christian County. We could be affected by Tornadoes, ice storms, straight line winds and earth quakes to name a few. All Christian County CERT Team's are trained in how to handle and address these situations as they happen. You can have a little bit of comfort in knowing our community has one more resource that will come out and help you in a time of need.

It is the mission of the Pennyrile Citizens Corps Council to have every citizen create a preparedness kit, create a preparedness plan, and volunteer in their community. The Citizen Corps Council brings together community leaders with the primary purpose of engaging all citizens in making America and our Community safer.

The Department of Homeland Security's "Ready Campaign" seeks to help American families be better prepared for even unlikely emergency scenarios. While we cannot always predict an attack, there are simple things you and your family can do to prepare for the possible event of a terrorist incident.

The Pennyrile Area Development District assists the regional Citizen Corps Council for the nine counties in the Pennyrile area by distributing and educating citizens on Preparedness and awareness through CERT Training, Neighborhood watch programs and informational pamphlets and publications. We strive to have Every Citizen become aware of potential hazards and prepare for them. A Prepared and Ready Citizen and Community is a Safer and Strong Community.
